Bangkok was declared a disaster zone on Sunday after the capital received over 30โ€ฏcentimetres (12โ€ฏinches) of rain in a 48โ€‘hour period, flooding streets and disrupting daily life across the city.

The deluge comes as the Thai monsoon season peaks and climateโ€‘change models predict more intense rainfall events. Bangkok sits on a lowโ€‘lying plain, and its drainage system struggles to cope with sudden, heavy showers. In recent years the city has faced several major floods, most notably in 2011 and 2017, when water reached the same height as the Chao Phraya Riverโ€™s banks.

Hundreds of residents were forced to evacuate their homes in the districts of Bang Kapi, Bang Sue and Chatuchak. Roads in Sukhumvit and Silom turned into rivers, shutting down public transport. The police reported over 1,200 emergency calls, and the army deployed water pumps to clear key intersections. Damage to infrastructure was already visible, with power outages in the central business district and several schools closed for the week.

The government has set up temporary shelters in community centres and schools. City officials say they will keep the pumps running until water levels drop below 30โ€ฏcentimetres. The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a warning for the next two days, and the Ministry of Public Health is preparing to provide medical aid to those affected. In the long run, Bangkokโ€™s authorities are looking at upgrading the drainage network and building flood barriers, but the immediate focus remains on keeping residents safe and restoring normal traffic flow.
