Lib Dem MPs have publicly rebuked party leader Sir Edโ€ฏDavey for defending the stateโ€‘pension โ€œtriple lockโ€ after his interview on the BBCโ€™s Today programme, where he warned that scrapping the lock would push more pensioners into poverty. The criticism came on Wednesday from senior frontbenchers who said the leaderโ€™s remarks were out of step with the majority of Liberal Democrat parliamentarians.

The triple lock, introduced by the 2010 Conservativeโ€‘Liberal Democrat coalition, guarantees that the basic state pension rises each year by the highest of inflation, average earnings growth, or 2.5โ€ฏpercent. Labourโ€™s shadow chancellor, Andyโ€ฏBurnham, has proposed ending the earnings link from 2030, leaving only the 2.5โ€ฏpercent or inflation floor, as part of a plan to raise ยฃ15โ€ฏbillion a year for socialโ€‘care reforms. Burnham argues the change is needed to fund a sector that is currently underโ€‘financed, while Davey has called the proposal โ€œa little bit of a vibeโ€ and not a solution, insisting the lock protects future retirees.

Backbench MPs have pushed back hard. Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Tom Gordon called Daveyโ€™s defence โ€œnonsenseโ€ on X, saying it โ€œgaslights an entire generationโ€ and that millennials will be โ€œthe first generation worse off than our parentsโ€. Midโ€‘Dorset MP Vikkiโ€ฏSlade echoed the sentiment on Bluesky, noting most millennials doubt they will receive a state pension and urging the party to look beyond the lockโ€™s 2010 origins. A Libโ€ฏDem spokesperson acknowledged the lockโ€™s controversy, saying it has done โ€œa lot of goodโ€ but that Labourโ€™s alternative could leave todayโ€™s workers poorer in retirement. The spokesperson added the party wants Burnhamโ€™s plan to be reconsidered, not abandoned.

The internal dispute is likely to surface at the next party conference, where MPs and party officials will debate whether to keep the triple lock, modify it, or adopt a new framework that balances pension security with socialโ€‘care funding. How the Liberal Democrats resolve the split could shape their stance in upcoming elections and influence the broader debate on the sustainability of the UKโ€™s pension system.
