NASA Crew-13 tracks blood flow and brain changes for future Mars trips

NASA has announced that it will conduct a series of biomedical studies on the SpaceX Crewโ€‘13 mission to the International Space Station. The sixโ€‘member crew, which launched on 12โ€ฏMarchโ€ฏ2024, will support investigations into how spaceflight affects blood flow, clotting, vision, brain function and manual piloting skills.

The focus on blood and clotting comes after a 2020 incident in which an astronaut suffered a blood clot during a longโ€‘duration flight. Longโ€‘term missions, such as a trip to Mars, could expose crew to higher risks of cardiovascular problems. Studies on vision and brain changes are also critical because microgravity can alter the shape of the eye and affect spatial orientation, leading to motion sickness and reduced performance.

During the sixโ€‘month stay, the crew will perform daily blood draws and use wearable sensors to monitor circulation. They will also fly a small robotic arm to test manual control under microgravity. Neuroโ€‘imaging scans will track changes in brain activity, while eyeโ€‘tracking devices will measure visual acuity. NASA will collaborate with the European Space Agency and commercial partners to share data and refine countermeasures such as exercise protocols and medication.

After the mission, scientists will analyze the data to develop safer flight plans and medical guidelines. Findings could guide the design of future habitats and lifeโ€‘support systems. The research will also help NASA prepare for crewed missions beyond lowโ€‘Earth orbit, ensuring astronauts remain healthy and capable of performing critical tasks in deep space.
