Peter Thiel told the MDโ€ฏMeets podcast that Americaโ€™s backlash against artificial intelligence is a selfโ€‘inflicted wound, arguing that the United States is stifling its own innovation by overreacting to the technology. He said the country is reacting to the perceived risks of AI without weighing the benefits of the same tools that are driving global growth.

The debate comes as lawmakers and regulators in Washington push for tighter rules on AI. New proposals aim to curb the use of large language models for disinformation, protect privacy, and address job displacement. Critics worry that too much regulation could hand the advantage to rivals, especially China, where the government has already invested billions in AI research and deployment.

Thiel, the PayPal coโ€‘founder and early investor in companies such as Palantir, has long warned that the U.S. could lose its edge if it adopts a defensive posture. He pointed out that AI firms in the United States are already generating tens of billions in revenue and that the U.S. still leads in venture capital funding for AI startups. He cautioned that a clampโ€‘down could drive talent and capital overseas, undermining the countryโ€™s tech ecosystem.

What comes next is uncertain. Congress is set to hold hearings on AI regulation in the coming months, and industry groups are lobbying for a balanced approach that addresses safety without stifling progress. Thiel has said he will continue to speak out, and his influence could shape the conversation as lawmakers seek to craft policies that protect citizens while preserving the U.S.โ€™s leadership in the field.
